Therefore, the longlist of the Man Booker Prize 2018 was announced. It has seemed strange in the past few years that I haven’t made a post or video on guessing the longlist, as I’ve followed the award in some form and then the Man Booker International Prize since starting Savidge Reads. When I started reading again in my twenties (after six years of not picking up a book, introduce yourself) the Booker was a guide for me to some great readings that I should really be going to. In recent years, however, love has subsided a bit. I had the feeling that it was a little lost. I actually talk about this in a video I’ll be embedding below. Don’t worry, I won’t be sharing all of my videos. I know that some people prefer one medium to another. It’s just that I can add / be a little bit more ha.
So here is the longlist …
- Snap from Belinda Bauer
- Milkman by Anna Burns
- Sabrina by Nick Drnaso
- Washington Black by Esi Edugyan
- In our crazy and mad town of Guy Gunaratne
- Everything below by Daisy Johnson
- Rachel Kushner’s Martian Room
- The water healing by Sophie Mackintosh
- Warlight by Michael Ondaatje
- The story of Richard Powers
- The Long Take by Robin Robertson
- Normal people from Sally Rooney
- From a low and calm sea by Donal Ryan
What do I think of the list? First off, I was shocked that I had read one (The Water Cure, review in due course) and had everyone on my shelves except Warlight, The Long Take and Sabrina, the latter of which I have already bought and corrected the latter. Second, I think this is a really fresh (and much needed) list. It’s by no means the perfect list, but when are they? I would have liked more books from other Commonwealth areas like Africa, India and Australia etc. At the same time, I think it’s great that there are so many women on the list that there are some younger and lesser-known talents who commit a felony novel and a graphic novel an easy sense of excitement and change. I will talk about this below.
So these are my first thoughts. Will I read the whole longlist? Not on purpose, no. That said, I’m about to start The Mars Room as a buddy reading with my buddy Mercedes. I’m very keen to read Washington Black, Everything Under, Snap, and Milkman for sure. Then I think I’ll see what makes my moody moods, what is the best way to read some point. What are your thoughts? Do you like the list? What is missing, if anything? Let’s have a chat in the comments below.
